How to Use Reference Tracks: Choosing, Listening & LUFS Comparison

A reference track is a commercial song you A/B against as the "baseline" for your own work. It's a standard technique even in professional mixing and mastering, and it's considered a cost-effective quality-control method because it corrects the ear's illusions (the track you're working on always sounds good; louder always sounds better).

That said, a reference barely works if you just "play it loosely in the background." This article breaks the process into three stages — choosing → listening → comparing by the numbers — down to the concrete steps for comparing a commercial song and your beat by LUFS and crest using our dynamics analysis tool. Note that obtaining reference audio assumes legitimate means such as purchase (see below).

1. Getting the audio — a near-uncompressed file via legitimate routes

Prepare the audio that forms the basis of comparison via legitimate routes like the following.

Playback via streaming services works for everyday A/B listening too, but because loudness normalization at playback (each service's mechanism for auto-adjusting volume; see our LUFS guide for details) is applied, it's not suited to measuring "the commercial song's original loudness." When analyzing as a file, use purchased audio. Do not extract audio from video sites and the like, as it raises problems in terms of terms of service and rights.

2. Choosing — not "songs you like" but "songs that set a baseline"

A reference isn't a ranking of favorite songs; it's more like a calibration sample for a measuring instrument. There are four selection criteria.

For beatmakers, in addition to finished songs with vocals, adding an officially released instrumental version as a reference is handy because you can directly compare the band balance of the beat on its own.

3. Listening — it's all meaningless unless you match loudness

The biggest pitfall of reference comparison is that the human ear mistakes "louder" for "better." A commercial song is almost certainly louder than your rough mix, so if you A/B them as-is, all you'll feel is "theirs is better in every way," and you'll learn nothing.

  1. Match loudness: lower the reference's track fader so its perceived volume matches your beat (the point is to turn the commercial song down, not to turn your song up).
  2. Switch instantly: line both up in your DAW, align the playhead, and toggle solo. A gap of a few seconds resets your ears and you won't remember the difference.
  3. Listen for one element at a time: narrow your focus, like "just the weight of the kick and 808 this time," "just the brightness of the hats next." Listening to the whole vaguely ends in impressions.
  4. Repeat across multiple playback environments: doing the same comparison in three places — monitor headphones, speakers and a phone — removes environment-dependent misjudgments (for choosing gear, see our monitor headphones comparison).

The things to check are: the weight and tightness of the low end, how open the vocal band (mids) is, the brightness of the highs, the stereo width, and the dynamics of the volume. Listening in this order makes it easier to translate what needs fixing into concrete EQ and balance moves.

4. Comparing by the numbers — measuring with the dynamics tool

  2. Load your beat: measure it the same way and line up the numbers.
  3. Interpret the differences:
    • LUFS difference: if your beat is 3 dB or more quieter, that's a sign the master's loudness will sound weaker on audition. Conversely, too loud may mean over-crushing.
    • Crest difference: if the crest is far smaller than the commercial song's (e.g., 4 dB for you vs. 9 dB for the commercial song), over-limiting or over-compressing has robbed the punch.
    • True Peak: if it exceeds 0 dBTP, review your limiter's ceiling setting (−1.0 dBTP is a common choice).
  4. Fix and re-measure: correct the numbers one at a time and confirm together with the ear comparison from the previous section.

A caution: a commercial song's LUFS is not a "target value" but "context." Loudness varies greatly by genre and era, and on streaming it's normalized at playback. The differences you find in comparison only mean something once you assign them to concrete production steps.

Frequently asked questions

Q. How many reference tracks should I prepare?

A. Two or three is practical. With just one you tend to treat even that track's quirks as correct, and with too many your baseline drifts. Deciding what each song is a reference for — "low-end reference," "balance reference," "overall texture reference" — keeps you from getting lost.

Q. How should I obtain the audio for references?

A. The basics are to purchase the song from a download store or to rip it from a CD you own yourself. Streaming audio is affected by loudness normalization and compression, so purchased files are better suited for strict comparison. Do not extract audio from video sites and the like, as it raises problems in terms of terms of service and rights.

Q. Should I push my beat's loudness up to the same LUFS as commercial songs?

A. You don't need to chase the numbers directly. The integrated loudness of commercial songs varies greatly by genre and era, and streaming levels it out with normalization at playback. Q. If I follow a reference too closely, does it become plagiarism?

A. Referencing the "mix texture" — tonal tendencies, band balance and loudness — is itself a common production method. On the other hand, tracing a specific song's melody or importing part of its recording without permission is a separate matter and can infringe rights (see intro to sample clearance). Reference the "numbers and texture"; don't copy the "melody and recording."

Summary
