Drum Layering & Swing: How to Make Kicks and Snares Fat

"I'm sure I'm using the same samples, yet only my drums come out thin and don't bounce"—the main culprits behind that gap are layering (how you stack sounds) and swing (how you nudge the timing).

How to think about layering: give each layer a band to own.

1. The golden rule of layering—add "only what's missing"

Layering means building one instrument's sound from multiple samples. The goal isn't to "add more" sound, but to fill in what one sample lacks with another sample.

To do that, first think of a single drum hit as three frequency bands.

If "the low end is there but the attack is buried," correct layering means adding just one sample rich in attack. Stack two samples that are both full-range and the same bands collide and turn muddy—or, through the phase cancellation discussed below, actually get thinner.

2. Layering the kick—a band-splitting example

A kick's main content sits roughly at the fundamental (weight) around 40-100Hz, boxiness/boom around 200-400Hz, and the beater attack (click) around 2-5kHz. Here's the classic two-layer setup.

The key point is to always high-pass the low end out of the attack layer. Leave the low end in both and, depending on the phase relationship, they cancel and it gets thinner instead. This is the number-one cause of "I layered it but it got thinner."

Combining with an 808 bass

In trap-style tracks where the 808 (sub bass) owns the very low end, the standard move is to treat the kick purely as attack. Let the 808 handle the lowest octave, tidy the kick's low end, and if needed use sidechain to duck the 808 for the instant the kick hits. 3. Layering the snare—three layers is the standard

A snare sits at body thickness around 150-250Hz, attack snap around 2-4kHz, and snare-wire brightness above 6kHz. A common combination is:

The snare shows "over-stacking" even more than the kick. If two layers work, that's best; add a third only when a component is genuinely missing.

4. Phase check—solving the "layered but thinner" problem

When two waveforms play together, peak-on-peak makes the sound louder while peak-on-trough cancels out. Long-wavelength low frequencies are especially affected, so "stacking two made the low end thinner than one alone" is a textbook symptom of phase cancellation. Here's the three-step check.

  1. A/B compare: solo each layer, then play both together. If together is thinner in the low end, it needs attention
  2. Polarity flip: flip one track's polarity (Ø) and compare, keeping whichever sounds fatter in the low end
  3. Align the onsets: in a sample editor, zoom into the attack positions of the two waveforms and nudge one by a few milliseconds so the onset and the direction of the first swing line up

Finally, play it in mono to confirm the low end holds up—this gives you a kick that won't fall apart on club systems or phone speakers.

5. Velocity—this is where the "machine" feel is decided

Sixteenth-note hi-hats lined up at the same volume sound programmed on their own. Because a human drummer's strength varies with every hit, designing your velocities (hit strength) decides half of the groove. Guidelines follow (velocity is 0-127).

Many DAWs have velocity randomize or humanize features, but the trick is to keep the "strong on the beat" regularity while varying the rest. Fully random just sounds like sloppy playing.

6. Swing settings—what the numbers mean and practical ranges

Swing pushes even-numbered eighth or sixteenth notes later to create "bounce." The important thing here is that there are two systems of notation depending on the DAW or sampler.

In other words, the number "60% swing" tells you nothing about strong or weak unless you know the notation. First confirm which base your setup uses. Then, the practical guide in MPC-style notation is as follows (a starting point only—your ears make the final call).

Whether you apply swing to sixteenths or eighths also changes the feel a lot. If the hi-hats are mainly sixteenths, use sixteenth swing; if mainly eighths, eighth swing. 7. Final check—export and look at the meters

When layering increases the amount of low-end information, you can eat up your headroom without realizing it. Q. How many drum layers should I stack?

A. Two to three is enough in most cases. The more you stack, the harder phase becomes to manage, and the sound actually gets muddier. Give each layer a clear role—"low end," "body" and "attack"—and cut layers whose roles overlap.

Q. How do I check whether the layers are in phase?

A. If the low end gets thinner when you play two layers together than with just one, that's a sign of phase cancellation. Check three things: flip one layer's polarity and keep whichever sounds fatter in the low end; align the position of the waveform's onset and the direction of the first swing; and confirm in mono.

Q. What percentage should I set the swing to?

A. First check how your DAW labels it. In MPC-style notation, 50% is no swing and around 66.7% is triplet-equivalent, so 52-56% is subtle and 58-63% is a clear bounce. Many DAWs instead treat 0% as no swing, so the same number means different things. Always make the final call with your ears.
