Sample chopping is a core sampling technique in which you cut an existing phrase into small pieces, rearrange them and build a new loop. It's used widely — not only in hip-hop but also in lo-fi, house and trap lead-making.
This article explains chopping's three representative approaches — even slicing, transient-detection slicing and repitching — in steps a beginner can copy directly. The practice assumes you use legal material such as Splice or Tracklib. You cannot chop a commercial song without permission and use it in beats for sale. The practice of cutting up samples is said to have developed greatly in hip-hop from the late 1980s into the '90s. Samplers of the time had extremely little memory (for example, the E-mu SP-1200's sampling time totaled about 10 seconds), so they couldn't take in long phrases as-is; producers honed the method of cutting out short fragments, assigning them to pads, and finger-drumming to reconstruct them. This constraint, as the widely told account goes, ultimately produced the chopping aesthetic of "reincarnating source material into a different song while keeping a trace of the original." In the 2000s, the soulful style of speeding samples up to play them at higher pitch also became common.
At the same time, this culture always sat next to the issue of sample clearance (rights handling). As summarized in our clearance article, since the 1991 U.S. ruling it became "industry common sense to clear samples before release." This article, too, does not recommend sampling any specific record; its goal is to learn the technique itself with legal material.
Material you can use to practice and work with chopping falls broadly into two categories.
It's a good idea to start by downloading one 4–8-bar music loop from Splice-style sources (piano, Rhodes, strings, etc.). The material's BPM and key are often written in the filename, but if they're unknown, dropping the file into our BPM/key detection tool lets you check them for free.
The most basic chop. You mechanically divide the sample into equal parts by beat (8 or 16 slices are standard), assign each fragment to a pad or key, and re-drum them in whatever order you like.
The appeal of even slicing is the accidental rhythm created by fragments chopped off mid-phrase. A fragment that starts somewhere other than the head of a chord is itself the seed of a new groove. Getting a feel for it by playing under constraints like "make a loop using only fragments 2 and 6" works well.
The opposite of even slicing: detecting attacks (transients) and slicing at musical divisions. Many DAWs and samplers have a function that auto-detects a waveform's attacks and places slice markers.
The advantage of this method is that chord changes and the heads of single notes are cut out cleanly, so each fragment becomes a "usable sound." Arrange the extracted chord fragments in a different order and you can build a loop with a different chord progression from the source.
Three practical tips:
Alongside chopping, pitch manipulation is a core of sampling. There are two methods, and the character of the sound changes greatly.

One cause of the thickness of the hardware-sampler era is said to be the change in texture from repitching (and low sample rates) (see the secret of the '90s boom-bap sound). Even in modern DAWs, choosing a "stretch off, match by playback speed" mode reproduces the same behavior. Practical rules of thumb are as follows.
Once you have a 2–4-bar chopped loop, put drums on it to finish the beat. For choosing kicks and snares and setting swing, see drum layering and swing settings; for developing the whole song, see beat arrangement structure. For a loudness check before export, you can use the dynamics analysis tool.
A. Regardless of the degree of processing, sampling a commercial song without rights clearance can infringe rights. There is no "as long as no one notices" standard, and audio-matching technology keeps advancing. A. If you want to use loop material safely and at scale, Splice; if you want something close to digging real released songs and sampling them, Tracklib. In the early stage of getting used to the workflow, royalty-free material such as Splice is easy, and once you want the texture of chopping real songs, considering Tracklib is the standard flow.
A. The right answer changes with the material and your goal. If you want to rearrange rhythm, starting from 8 to 16 even slices is easy to handle, and if you want to keep chords or phrases intact, slicing at transient positions is better suited. First get a feel with even slicing, then use them selectively once you're comfortable.
A. Repitch changes the whole playback speed, so pitch and tempo change together, and the change in texture makes it sound sampled. Time-stretch lets you change tempo (or pitch) independently, but overdoing it produces artifacts. For texture, repitch; when you want to match key and BPM precisely, stretch.
Chopping is a technique decided less by the number of moves than by "the sense of where to cut and how to rearrange." With legal material you can focus on trial and error without rights worries, so start by rearranging a single loop 10 different ways.
