How to Mix 808s and Bass: Kick Separation, Mono & Tuning
Your low end sounds "muddy and won't cut through," or "the bass disappears on a phone" — these are the two most common problems when mixing 808s and bass. The causes are almost always the same four: (1) tuning that's off, (2) frequency clash with the kick, (3) stereo spread in the low end, and (4) a lack of harmonics.
We knock these four out from the top. No special plugins are needed — you can do it with your DAW's stock EQ, compressor and saturator. Note that all frequencies and values in the text are general "starting-point" guidelines; always make the final call with your ears.
1. Tuning: key matching is the foundation of everything
Before mixing, the first thing to check is whether the 808's pitch matches the key of the track. Because the 808 is a "pitched instrument" that sustains in the sub range, if it's off-key, no amount of EQ or compression will stop it from clashing with the other parts.
- Check the track's key: for sample-based tracks, the sample's key is the reference. If you don't know the key, load your audio into the BPM & Key detection tool to check the key and BPM in the browser
- Match the 808's root: many 808 samples are distributed at a reference note such as C. Set the root note in your sampler and program within the key's scale
- Glide (portamento) and tails: glide, which smoothly connects notes, is a trap staple, but if a tail (decay) overlaps the next note it gets muddy. Tidy up note lengths so the 808s don't overlap
2. Kick vs. 808 separation: role split → EQ → sidechain
First, decide "which one carries the sub"
The kick and 808 are rivals fighting for the same low end. The standard is to have one carry the sub (the lowest end) while the other is pushed toward attack. In trap styles where the 808 sustains, the "sub = 808, attack (knock) = kick" split is widely used. Conversely, in genres where the kick's weight is the star, cede the low end by, for example, raising the 808 an octave.
Complementary EQ: dodge the other's "peak" by just 1–2 dB
Once roles are set, use EQ to carve out space for each. The move isn't a full cut but lowering the frequency where the other part is loudest by just 1–2 dB on your side — "complementary EQ." For example, if the kick's weight sits around 60 Hz, dip the 808's 60 Hz area by 1–2 dB, and have the kick back off in the band the 808 wants to own (e.g., around 40–50 Hz). Sidechain: shallow, and just for an instant
When the kick and 808 hit together and get muddy, put a sidechain compressor on the 808 and feed the kick to the key input. Standard settings are as follows (guidelines):

The goal isn't EDM-style pumping but briefly making room for the kick. If the 808 sounds like it's "wah-wah" undulating, that's a sign you've applied too much.
3. Mono compatibility: keep the lows mono, widen only the top
Many playback environments — club systems, phone speakers — sum the low end to mono. If the lows are spread in stereo, they can thin out from phase cancellation in mono, or sound very different depending on the environment.
- Keep the lows (below about 120 Hz) mono: mono-ing just the lows with a utility or imager is standard. The 808 and kick are basically center-placed
- If you want stereo width, widen only the harmonics: if you want to use chorus or a widener on the 808, apply it multiband to the mid-highs only, excluding the lows
- Make checking in mono a habit: switch to mono during the mix and confirm the core of the 808 doesn't disappear
4. Saturation: make the 808 "audible" on small speakers
A pure 808 or sub bass is close to a sine wave and has almost no harmonic content. Phone and laptop speakers can't reproduce the sub range in the first place, so boosting the lows with EQ won't solve it. The answer is to generate new harmonics with saturation (distortion). Because harmonics are created in the midrange, even small speakers will pick up a "sense of the bass."
Especially handy is the standard parallel distortion layer technique:
- Duplicate the 808 track
- Distort only the copy hard with distortion or a tape-style plugin
- High-pass the copy around 120–200 Hz, keeping only the harmonics (guideline)
- Blend the copy in quietly beneath the clean 808

5. Finishing: verify with numbers, too
Because the low end is the band most affected by the playback environment, it's reassuring to verify with numbers, not just your ears. Run your exported 2-mix through the dynamics analysis tool to measure LUFS, True Peak and crest factor in the browser. A mix with too much low end tends to show a small crest factor relative to its loudness (the limiter working uselessly on the lows), so it's useful as a health check before mastering.

Applied too heavily it pumps and sounds unnatural, so use it with the mindset of "briefly making room for the kick."
