This week opened on the courtroom and closed on a stacked New Music Friday. The Lil Durk federal trial we tracked last issue ended September 11 with an acquittal on every count. That same Friday brought a Jhené Aiko return, a French Montana / D-Block Europe collab, and a new Quavo single — while Drake finally revealed what "FOMO" actually is and Jay-Z reunited the Fugees for one night in London. Lil Durk acquitted on all counts — a separate trial still looms in October

As we noted last issue, prosecutors were wrapping up their case — and on September 11 a Los Angeles jury acquitted Lil Durk (Durk Banks, 33) on all five federal counts, including conspiracy tied to a murder-for-hire theory. Prosecutors argued Durk blamed Quando Rondo for the 2020 death of his friend and protégé King Von and, in retaliation, put a price on Quando Rondo's head, setting off a 2022 shooting in Los Angeles.

The person killed in that shooting was not Quando Rondo but his cousin, Saviay'a "Lul Pab" Robinson. The jury found the government failed to prove its case. It isn't fully over, though: Durk still faces a separate federal racketeering (RICO) case, expected to begin around October 5. It was the most widely covered story of the week and a clear turn in a thread we've been following.

Drake's "FOMO" is a short film — premieres Sep 15 on YouTube

Last issue we flagged Drake's teased September 15 livestream — and now we know what it is. Not an album or a tour, but what he calls a "not so short film," premiering September 15 (9 p.m. ET) on YouTube. He says it was "directed and scored by the family," making it a distinctly personal project.

A 25-second teaser shows Drake piloting a colorful boat across Lake Ontario as a woman's voice sets up the theme: "What if I told you there were two versions of your life? In one, you avoid risk and withhold love…" FOMO stands for "Fear of Missing Out." After weeks of drip-fed clues, the mysterious rollout lands as a film — with the full reveal coming in tonight's premiere.

Jhené Aiko returns with "Westside Whimsy" — Kendrick Lamar features again

R&B singer Jhené Aiko released her fourth studio album, Westside Whimsy, on September 11 — her first in six years, since 2020's Chilombo. She surprise-announced it on social media the week of release. The 20-track, roughly 55-minute record plays as a love letter to her hometown of Los Angeles.

Features include Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, Larry June, Tyga, and Ohma. The standout talking point is "So Good," which reunites Aiko with Kendrick after past collaborations like "Growing Apart." It was the most-discussed release of the week and, for R&B fans, a long-awaited comeback.

Jay-Z headlines a 30th-anniversary London show — the Fugees reunite for a night

Jay-Z headlined Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London on September 4 for a show marking his 30 years in music — his first solo UK headline date in over a decade, drawing a reported 60,000 fans. The centerpiece: a one-night Fugees reunion, as he brought out Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean for their 1996 hits "Ready or Not," "Killing Me Softly," and "Fu-Gee-La."

Jay-Z spoke directly to Hill onstage — "We're both celebrating 30 years. I appreciate you, forever a fan." Idris Elba delivered the intro, South London's Giggs took the stage, and Jay-Z shined a light on his wife Beyoncé, who was celebrating her birthday. A career milestone marked by the people around him.

2Pac case: Keffe D sentencing set for Oct 13, defense plans to appeal

A follow-up to last issue's verdict. After Duane "Keffe D" Davis, 63, was found guilty on August 31 of first-degree murder (with a deadly-weapon enhancement), the court in Clark County, Nevada set his sentencing for October 13. He faces a maximum of life without the possibility of parole, and told the judge he plans to appeal.

Shakur was stopped at a Las Vegas red light on September 7, 1996 when his car was fired on — and this is the first conviction in the case nearly 30 years on. Prosecutors never claimed Davis pulled the trigger; their case was that he planned and directed the attack. With an appeal signaled, the long-running case still has another chapter ahead.

Victoria Monét drops "Juicy," announces album "Frequency of Love" and a tour

R&B artist Victoria Monét released a new single, "Juicy," and paired it with an album announcement and a North American tour. "Juicy" leans hard into lush, funky old-school R&B — it even carries a writing credit for Babyface, with production from D'Mile and others.

Her new album, Frequency of Love, is set for October 2 — her first since her 2023 breakout Jaguar II. The Live Nation–produced trek spans 27 North American cities, and earlier singles "Let Me" and "Reach Out" have been laying the groundwork. In a week heavy on hip-hop headlines, an R&B mainstay made her presence felt.

French Montana & D-Block Europe drop "WORLDWIDE WAVE," with Max B

French Montana teamed with UK group D-Block Europe for the collaborative album WORLDWIDE WAVE, out September 11 — a transatlantic link-up from South London to the Bronx. The 19-track project features Max B, whom we covered last issue, over melancholy trap beats and heavy Auto-Tune.

The lead single is "RICO." Rather than chasing the charts, the album trades on the two camps' hometown textures, and it arrives ahead of their European tour. It's a clean snapshot of how routine cross-border collaborations have become in rap right now.

Quavo & T.I. link on "Backwards," produced by Pharrell — a preview of "QRÖMELIFE"

Quavo released "Backwards" with T.I. on September 11, bringing together two generations of Atlanta rap — Quavo, who helped make Migos one of the biggest groups in the genre, and T.I., a foundational figure in the city's rise. Pharrell Williams produced it, and the party-leaning track arrived with a music video.

The song also previews Quavo's next album, QRÖMELIFE, due October 2 with Pharrell serving as executive producer — the latest example of Pharrell bridging veterans and younger stars.

21 Savage and Latto make their first public appearance together at the US Open

21 Savage and Latto appeared together at the US Open women's final on September 12 — their first time on a carpet as a couple after keeping the relationship largely private. The two announced they were expecting earlier this year and welcomed their daughter in May.

Their coordinated (or not-so-coordinated) looks and poses drew some good-natured ribbing online. It's off the music beat, but it gave fans a rare look at a pairing that had stayed out of view — and it traveled widely.

"Mac Dre Way": Vallejo renames a street for the hyphy pioneer

The Vallejo, California city council voted unanimously to rename a city street after the late Andre "Mac Dre" Hicks. North Vallejo's Taper Avenue will carry the honorary name "Mac Dre Way," a roughly half-mile stretch around the block where he grew up. The petition was filed in July by a co-founder of Mac Dre's Thizz Entertainment label.

Mac Dre was a pioneer of the Bay Area's "hyphy" movement, and his influence reached later artists like Drake and E-40 (pictured) while pushing Vallejo's sound into the national conversation. It's the latest in a run of Bay Area moves to immortalize hip-hop figures in street signs.

Diddy seeks "immediate release" on appeal; release date moves up to January 2028

Sean "Diddy" Combs' attorneys are asking the appeals court for his "immediate release," seeking either an acquittal or a resentencing. The government counters that the sentence was fair and calls the appeal "meritless." As we noted last issue, his projected release date has moved up again — Bureau of Prisons records now list January 24, 2028.

Combs was convicted at his 2025 federal trial on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution and acquitted of the heavier racketeering (RICO) and sex-trafficking charges, drawing a 50-month sentence. He was reportedly placed in solitary confinement after an altercation with another inmate. All of it remains in dispute rather than settled.

Looking ahead: tonight's Drake "FOMO," and a big Sep 18

First up, tonight (September 15, 9 p.m. ET): Drake's "FOMO" premieres on YouTube, so we'll finally see what the short film actually is. On the release side, September 18 is the day to watch — Rakim's collab with Kurupt and Masta Killa, The Godbody LP, is due, with features from Snoop Dogg, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, KRS-One and Kool G Rap, and a reported Eminem–Jay-Z interlude marking their first collaboration in about 25 years. The same day, Nicki Minaj is a judge at the finals of a small-business pitch competition.

On the legal calendar, Lil Durk's separate federal (racketeering) trial is expected around October 5, and Keffe D's 2Pac sentencing is set for October 13. October 2 brings new albums from Victoria Monét and Quavo, so the music side looks busy for a while. More next issue.
