There was a gap since our last issue on October 2, so this one focuses on what happened from mid-October on. The biggest story is a report that Jay-Z has picked himself for the Super Bowl halftime show; it is unconfirmed, and fans are split. 50 Cent weighed in after the attack on Rick Ross's son, and Tinashe's "Popstar" landed at No. 6 on the Billboard 200. Here are 11 stories, ranked by our editorial team's judgment of reach of coverage, hard numbers, scale and how central a story is to this week.

Jay-Z reportedly picks himself for the Super Bowl halftime show; league and Roc Nation stay silent as fans split

Puck News reported that Jay-Z has chosen himself to headline the halftime show at Super Bowl LXI (February 2027, SoFi Stadium). HotNewHipHop relayed the report on October 20; Jay-Z, the NFL and Roc Nation had not commented, so none of this is confirmed.
The article also says Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus were reportedly asked and declined, though it names no source for that. The timing lines up with the 30th anniversary of "Reasonable Doubt" and the 25th of "The Blueprint." Reaction online has leaned negative, with critics calling it a legacy pick rather than a bid for the best show, and the hosts of Joe Budden's podcast sounded lukewarm too.

Arrest in attack on Rick Ross' son; 50 Cent offers to "bail out" the suspect

On October 11, Rick Ross's son William Roberts III, a football player at Bethune-Cookman, was threatened with a handgun and struck on the head near campus in Daytona Beach, Florida, according to local station WKMG. He had minor swelling and declined treatment. Police arrested a 20-year-old on charges including aggravated assault; the incident appears tied to the suspect's past relationship with a woman who was with him.
50 Cent then mocked the victim for calling police, offered to post the suspect's bond, and said he was sending attorney Drew Findling. The victim's mother, Tia Kemp, hit back, and the feud spread to personal attacks on family. WKMG added on Tuesday that the suspect no longer appeared on the county jail's online roster; the reason is unknown.

Tinashe's "Popstar" debuts at No. 6 on the Billboard 200, her first top 10

The projection we flagged last issue was beaten: Tinashe's new album "Popstar" debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 dated October 10, her first top-10 album. It earned 35,500 equivalent album units (streams and sales converted to album-sized figures), 22,000 of them from pure album sales, well above the roughly 27,000 forecast.
Her previous best was the 2014 debut "Aquarius," which peaked at No. 17, so this is her first career high in more than ten years.

Gucci Mane releases 17-track "Against All Odds" while Big30 denies robbery allegations
Gucci Mane's new album "Against All Odds" arrived on October 16 with 17 tracks. Summer Walker, ICE DAVIS and OJ da Juiceman are reported guests; we could not verify the full guest list or producer credits.
Separately, Big30, who faces charges over an alleged armed robbery of Gucci Mane earlier this year, denied the allegations in an interview and said he expects a good outcome. Prosecutors allege Pooh Shiesty and others tried to force Gucci Mane out of his record deal; those are the prosecution's claims, not established facts. Big30 has been granted bond.

LL Cool J on chasing clicks: "Make another good song"
On Carmelo Anthony's "7PM in Brooklyn" podcast (October 16), LL Cool J criticized an industry where "data was running the show." He argued that artists who obsess over fitting a viral clip lose what makes a record memorable.
High view counts don't necessarily show a real connection with listeners, he said, and he advised young rappers to build a loyal audience instead of chasing trends. His short version: "Make another good song." It draws on making his 2024 album "The FORCE" with Q-Tip handling production.
