This week put the courtroom and New Music Friday side by side. Lil Durk's federal trial finally got moving in Los Angeles, while the 2Pac murder trial in Las Vegas reached the testimony stage. Friday delivered Rapsody's new album God Gotta Afro & Gold Hoops and Cam'ron's tribute to his late mother, Frederica, on the same day. Tyler, the Creator's Camp Flog Gnaw revealed its full fall lineup. Here are 11 stories, ranked by our own editorial judgment — reach of coverage, hard numbers, scale, and how central they are to this week.

Lil Durk's federal trial opens in Los Angeles
As we previewed last time, Lil Durk's federal trial began Thursday, August 20, with jury selection at the U.S. District Court in Los Angeles; opening statements are set to follow. The charge is a murder-for-hire scheme — hiring someone to carry out a killing. Prosecutors say a 2022 shooting in Los Angeles targeted rapper Quando Rondo but instead killed his cousin, Saviay'a "Lul Pab" Robinson, allegedly in retaliation for the 2020 death of King Von.
On trial alongside Durk are five associates from his Only the Family (OTF) label. Prosecutors plan to call roughly 35 witnesses, about 20 of them substantive to the case. Just before the trial, the government claimed Durk had rejected a "peace offering" from a Quando Rondo affiliate. Durk has pleaded not guilty and faces a possible life sentence, and whether his lyrics can be used as evidence is set to be argued again.

2Pac murder trial reaches testimony; Keffe D's own words are key

The trial of Duane "Keffe D" Davis, 63, has moved past jury selection and opening statements into testimony this week. It's the first-ever murder trial over the 1996 Las Vegas drive-by that killed 2Pac. Prosecutors don't allege Davis pulled the trigger; their case is that he planned the attack and directed it. Under Nevada law, taking part in a killing plot can bring a murder conviction even if someone else fired the shots.
The case turns on Davis's own words. In his 2019 memoir and interviews, he described sitting in the front seat of a white Cadillac and handing a gun to the men in the back. With his immunity appeal rejected by the Nevada Supreme Court, that memoir and a 2008 police interview are now in play. As noted last issue, Suge Knight — seated next to 2Pac that night — has refused to testify, so whether he takes the stand is still unclear. A conviction would mean life without parole.

Ye drops the Bianca Censori-directed "OK" video with Don Toliver

On August 17, Ye released the video for "OK," a deluxe track from BULLY featuring Don Toliver. It's directed by his wife, Bianca Censori — her fourth directorial release after "Father," "King" and "Gemini Season." The clip is set entirely in an operating room, where doctors work on a decapitated Ye, pulling objects from his body in a surreal, unsettling sequence.
When Toliver's verse arrives, he steps out of a locker, stands by the table and eventually reattaches Ye's head, bringing him back to life. Ye sits up and sharpens a sword as the shadow of a duel appears off to the side. The visual, more than the song, drove the conversation — and the split reactions made it one of the most-shared videos of the week.
Rapsody releases her fifth album, God Gotta Afro & Gold Hoops

North Carolina rapper Rapsody put out her fifth studio album, God Gotta Afro & Gold Hoops, via Roc Nation on August 21. The 16-track set includes the title single "God Gotta Afro," featuring South Africa's KARABO YA MORENA. It's her first full-length since 2024's Please Don't Cry, and she'd shared an "Apple Juice" video in late July.
Rapsody has always been valued for craft over chart-bait — the way she packs meaning into each line — which makes her one of the most anticipated writers around. Friday was crowded, but for listeners who want to sit with lyrics, this is the week's real headphones album.

Cam'ron honors his late mother with Frederica, plus a companion film

New York veteran Cam'ron released Cam'ron Presents: Frederica on August 21. The title carries the name of his late mother, Frederica, and it's his first substantial project in years. He'd already shared singles including "All Of Us" (with Free J and Dior) and "Hoodie Strings," and the album arrives alongside a short film of the same name.
Cam has lately been better known as the face of the "It Is What It Is" podcast, so a return built around his mother's name is his most personal move yet. Amid a Friday full of rap releases, it's the one whose backstory stands out most.

Eminem auctions 100+ signed sneakers for charity, led by the "Slim Shady" AJ3

Eminem has put more than 100 signed sneakers from his personal collection up for auction, headlined by two of the only 45 pairs ever made of his ultra-rare Air Jordan 3 "Slim Shady" Player Exclusive. They were created for his Super Bowl LVI halftime show in 2022 — a white leather upper with elephant-print overlays, red accents, a "Slim Shady" heel tag and a reversed "E" logo. It's the first time they've been offered to the public.
The sale runs through Julien's Auctions and closes August 25 at 10 a.m. PT, with 100% of proceeds going to the Marshall Mathers Foundation to support at-risk youth in and around Detroit. Not a release, but a very on-brand mix of collector heat and hometown giving-back.
Eric Bellinger drops his first self-titled album since joining Motown
R&B singer-songwriter Eric Bellinger released his self-titled album Eric Bellinger on August 21. It's his first full project since signing with the relaunched Tamla/Motown in 2026, and it runs 10 songs. Lead cuts like "Cry In Front Of You," "Just Like You" and "Fatherhood" lean into a more vulnerable, honest register built around love, growth and being a father.
A longtime working songwriter, Bellinger uses this one to show a more mature, reflective side. In a Friday dominated by rap, it's the vocal-forward release worth keeping on your radar.

Netflix lands the doc on Wu-Tang's one-of-one album

Netflix has acquired The Disciple: A Wu-Tang Fable, a documentary about Wu-Tang Clan's legendary single-copy album Once Upon a Time in Shaolin — recorded in secret over six years, pressed as one physical copy and housed in an ornate silver case, conceived as a work of art rather than a product.
Directed by Oscar winner Joanna Natasegara, it premiered at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, and Netflix reportedly paid north of $1 million for it. The story centers on Cilvaringz, the producer whose teenage Wu-Tang obsession led him into the group's inner circle and to studying under RZA. It streams October 16. For beatmakers curious about the making-of, there's plenty to chew on here.

Snoop Dogg biopic Snoop gets an August 6, 2027 release date

Universal Pictures has set August 6, 2027 as the release date for the Snoop Dogg biopic Snoop. The R-rated film stars Outer Banks actor Jonathan Daviss and is directed by Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow), following Snoop from his teenage years into adulthood.
It's the first project from Death Row Pictures, Snoop's own content label, with Imagine Entertainment's Brian Grazer producing. The release is still a year out, but it marks another hip-hop biopic officially in motion.
Looking ahead: Aug 28 brings Rod Wave, E-40 and Czarface
The end-of-summer run keeps going next Friday, August 28. Chart regular Rod Wave, Bay Area mainstay E-40 and the Inspectah Deck / Esoteric duo Czarface all have projects lined up — melodic radio-rap, veteran mic work and comic-book boom-bap in one day.
After a Friday powered by Rapsody and Cam'ron, August isn't slowing down. We'll cover how those land in next week's roundup.
