What is Serum 2? The "successor to Serum," and a free update
Serum 2 is a software synth developed by Xfer Records, released in March 2025. The biggest headline is that it was offered as a free update to Serum 1 owners. Handing out a next-generation version for free even to people who bought an earlier version is unusual for the industry, and the official Splice help center explicitly states that "all users who purchased Serum can upgrade to Serum 2 for free."
Your preset library carries over, too. Because it's officially stated that all Serum 1 presets can be loaded in Serum 2 (while the reverse — opening Serum 2 presets in Serum 1 — is not possible), there's no need to worry about the preset packs you've collected going to waste.
New feature review: what changed
1. Three oscillators, plus new synthesis methods
The previous two-oscillator setup has become three oscillators, and on top of wavetables, new oscillator types such as Sample, Multisample, Granular and Spectral have been added. The biggest evolution is that sampler-style sound design — like stretching a one-shot with granular to build texture — is now self-contained inside Serum. For beatmakers, this dramatically widens the range for leads and texture work.

2. Enhanced modulation
Serum's signature drag-and-drop modulation remains, while editing around LFOs and envelopes has been strengthened, letting you build more complex, evolving sounds. You get more freedom when creating moving basses and leads.

3. Built-in arpeggiator and clip sequencer
The newly added arpeggiator and MIDI clip sequencer let you build phrases inside the plugin alone. Since you can try rolls and arpeggios just by holding a chord, it's especially handy at the sketch stage of a melody loop. What's notable is that the Rent-to-Own total ($9.99 x25 = about $249.75; nominal total $249) is almost the same as buying outright. Since the installment design doesn't cost you interest, it's a reasonable option for people who want to "avoid a lump-sum outlay."

Outright purchase (Xfer Records official, etc.)
If you pay $249 on the official Xfer Records site or similar, you get a perpetual license that needs no authorization app from the start. The Splice help center notes that Xfer's license policy allows activation on up to four machines. If you have the funds and want to avoid an extra always-on app, this is the fastest route. Plugin Boutique also has its own Rent to Own program (interest-free, cancelable partway), but as far as our team confirmed the eligible-product list on July 7, 2026, Serum 2 was not included in the lineup.
